ACCM DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIMS’ SUPPORT PROGRAMME is working to ensure that women access refuge services where there is no discrimination adding to their vulnerability. This programme became ever so necessary in view of the dispersal of migrants from London into areas where there had not been cohesion for Black people previously: Although not exclusively, but due to cultural specific demands; our service is mainly working for BMEs, and more so as an African women’s refuge, located in South Yorkshire, UK. Run by women who themselves have had experience and understand the cultural background and specific needs of African women, we offer effective advice, support and safe accommodation to women and children fleeing violence and abuse in the home.
We understand that violence in the home takes many forms, mental, physical, emotional, and sexual abuse and we believe no women should be subject to domestic abuse. We support women who have experienced all kinds of abuse in escaping from the violence and rebuilding their lives.

ACCM DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIMS’ SUPPORT PROGRAMME is open to all women but we particularly specialise in issues affecting African women and we also give priority to women with children. If you suffer domestic abuse at home or would like to help someone escaping from violence, please contact us. Maybe you want to lead an independent and violence free life. Maybe you just need to talk to someone in confidence. Maybe you are worried about your neighbour or friend. In any case, we can provide help which will make the difference. We are here to support Women, in particular African/black women experiencing domestic violence. And we guarantee complete confidentiality.
We have special service provision approaches to cater for different aspects of need: e.g.: African women who are or not black, Muslim/Christian other or no faith women. We also help those who are of Arab origin. We style our services to the need; we do not put people in a straight jacket.
Children support

ACCM DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIMS’ SUPPORT PROGRAMME provides access to safe urgently required supported accommodation for women & children while they think about their options and decide what they want to do how they are going to rebuild their lives. We also provide practical help around rights, health, benefits, re-housing, solicitors, doctors and police appointments, etc. Due to lack of funding; but Using dedicated Volunteers, ACCM has dealt with many cases and have seen many women feeling depressed and traumatized by Violent experiences and understand the importance of emotional help and support. Our Volunteers and staff will help women to deal with their feelings & emotions and support them in their decisions.
ACCM DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIMS’ SUPPORT PROGRAMME also provides outreach help and support for women re-housed in Sheffield. Our aim is to help women to rebuild their lives successfully.
We also offer help and support to women who live in south Yorkshire and elsewhere but decide not to go into a refuge. For those who do not wish to stay in Sheffield for various reasons, we will refer them to other agencies, or if given time ACCM will negotiate rented accommodation or refuges.
ACCM secures accommodation as a service provider for its clients who would not be able to secure such accommodation from the private rental sector.
ACCM works with the clients to secure their benefit entitlement and ensure that rents and related expenses are met. Our access to refuge service is manned/staffed by volunteers and workers during office hours and there is a 24 hour emergency call-out system for women and their children.
Our Aims and Beliefs
ACCM DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIMS’ SUPPORT PROGRAMME aims realises that sometimes the violence does not necessarily come from a marital partner, but relatives and casual friends. Therefore we aim to provide women and children, who are victims or have experienced violence, with a safe supportive environment in which they can make their own decisions on how to rebuild their lives away from their abusers. We also aim to raise the profile of African women by recognizing that we, as African women, are strong and can lead our lives as we want to.
In a migrant community there are many twists and turns to life: We endeavour to highlight African women and children’s needs to other agencies and will challenge racist and sexist practices in organizations that offer direct provision to African women and children.
We believe that no man has the right to abuse women using sexual, mental and/or physical violence. We also believe that women do not lie about violence. We do not question their feelings and experiences of oppression.
We work towards and believe in empowering women to make their own choices, we do not influence their decisions. We do not discriminate on grounds of caste, religion, sexuality, race, age, disability or class.
We believe in offering a service that concentrates wholly on the needs of women & children. Therefore we will not pass on messages from family or friends, thus avoiding any pressure or conflict of interest for the woman.
Programme Research
ACCM DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIMS’ SUPPORT PROGRAMME is currently aiming to setup a project that will conduct research on domestic violence and African women in UK. We envisage cooperation to work in conjunction with the Survey and Statistical Research Centre. It is envisaged that the research will secure funds.
The Context of work
There has been a growth in the number of refuges for women and their children in Britain. Although all women suffering domestic violence share similarities in their experiences, the dimension of culture and racism may pose and present further difficulties for African and Muslim women.
Key Research work Objectives
The primary objectives of this research are to investigate
- the range of support options available to African and Muslim women in particular who are the victims of domestic violence;
- the types of provision that the women believe they need;
- whether or not the needs of the women are being adequately met.
